I went to the Watford game in '78... they were in the 3rd or 4th division then.... 36k is an amazing turnout... those were the days.

So all top flight teams at the time then? Who'd have thought it...
You've picked out half a dozen games over 30 years.

You know what, if teams don't want to take the competition seriously then withdraw and let lower league teams play in it and give them a Europa League spot

When Pardew was there they were saying their research showed that playing extra Cup games harmed League form and almost certainly hurt their FINANCIAL performance overall so it was club policy to TANK. How sad is that? * wonders whether we have the same policy but just aren't as stupid as to say it in public*

The fact that people turn up more for league games than the FA cup regularly over decades suggests there's not as much interest as made out to be really.
Kinda speaks for itself.
Since the 60's through to the early 90's when it supposedly killed by the premiership? Nothing like rewriting history.
1985 - FA CUP - only 11,400 turned up to Upton Park for the 3rd round....all of them waving home made foil cups creating mental atmosphere i'm sure.
Over exposure on saints and greasvie and transworld sport were to blame!

most of us in this modern tv era would have expected a 12.45 tv game today , far easier for most fans than late sunday/midweek games but NO, as usual in the people's cup today its up yours to the punters !

Because Carver is obviously Ashley's lapdog and has been told mid-table will be a right result for them...
No ambition.
Good to see Billy Knott getting a couple at Millwall, West Ham boy...

If you are the caretaker Newcastle manager why would you rest your best players for an away game at a fellow PremierLeague team.... they don't play again for a week and are now out of the FA Cup.... surprise, surprise John Carver gets booed when he goes over to applaud the fans.

"The "magic" is that we have an outside chance of actually winning the cup one day. If you prefer to watch us week in week out finish mid table in a competition we will NEVER win, you are clearly more easily satisfied than me. I actually want us to win some silverware, to see us at Wembley, to see that open top bus parade.
I'd happily trade that for relegation any day."
I really hate this sort of bollocks. A costly relegation isn't going to benefit us in the long run, just for a fleeting moment of glory.
I'd rather us build on what we have and get into europe as we will have a better chance of winning cups regularly!

You used to get a couple of free tickets with season tickets.
I remember saving mine for the FA cup as the league cup was weekday and I never went to many weeknight matches when I was a kid.

Ron what exactly are you comparing in that table?
The "magic" is that we have an outside chance of actually winning the cup one day. If you prefer to watch us week in week out finish mid table in a competition we will NEVER win, you are clearly more easily satisfied than me. I actually want us to win some silverware, to see us at Wembley, to see that open top bus parade.
I'd happily trade that for relegation any day. Sky would have you believe that the PL is the be all and end all.

Ron not sure you can measure it these days by attendances with the rise of ST's if we still got a couple of cup games like we used to I think the crowds would be similar or more
